Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf
Other Info: Presented by Unity Theatre and Action Transport Theatre

A small figure sets off, with red cloak and hood
to grandmas they go, the other side of the woods

Do not stop to smell the flowers, or sing to the birds
or climb a tall tree, remember these words…

Do not leave the path, for you’d make a tasty treat!
For the hungriest wolf of all, who is ready to eat!

Join us for a bold and highly theatrical re-telling of the well-known classic tale packed with music, dance and song.

The production explores the thrill of adventure and unknown versus the safety and familiarity of the path and how irresistible straying can be, as well as the tension between mankind and nature. Are the wolves really the villains in a world where the woodcutter is destroying the forest? And is Grandma the trophy hunter really sick?

Band / Bands: Live/Wire The AC/DC Show
Other Info: Live/Wire is The AC/DC Show. The unique six-man tribute to rock music's greatest band AC/DC, complete with cannons, a wall of Marshalls' and over two hours of High Voltage Rock 'n' Roll.

The AC/DC story is over forty years in the making, with two specific eras and the band cover both these as always with both 'Gary' Bon Scott and 'Pete' Brian Johnson present to take you on the Rock and Roll train for a night to remember. Originally fronting AC/DC was legendary front man Bon Scott, a wild man of rock and roll, whose untimely death shocked the world in 1980. This event came at a time when the band was sampling global success for the first time. Gary delivers songs from the Band’s first half dozen albums from Dirty Deeds to Highway to Hell with Bon's inimitable attitude and style. Pete, then dons the flat cap as Geordie vocalist, Brian Johnson, whom AC/DC turned to in order to fill the void left by Bon. Brian's searing vocals Iced Back in Black, one of the best-selling rock albums of all time! Brian has now been with AC/DC for well over thirty years and like a good wine he’s matured with age. Pete brings the Live/Wire show bang up to date with classic "Brian" songs and includes some tracks from AC/DC's recent and hugely successful new album, Rock or Bust.

The band aim to put you slap bang in the middle of the show with hit after hit, and you are expected to join in! There'll also be one or two gems thrown in for the aficionados! We'd be hung, drawn and quartered if we didn't play all the classics, Back in Black, Rosie, Highway to hell are all there, and the songs keep on coming until the cannons fire ceremoniously to bring the evening to a superb crescendo. If by this time you are still standing we salute you! Long Live AC/DC, Long Live LIVE/WIRE

Band / Bands: Who's Who
Other Info: Formed in West London in 1996, Who’s Who, the longest established Who Tribute Show in the UK, have received incredible reactions across Europe and beyond for their exciting live performances. Widely respected and acknowledged by members of The Who, as the group that most interprets the songs of Pete Townshend and the legendary live performances of The Who, with honesty and integrity. Giving nothing less than 100% during a performance, Who ’s Who ensure that a night to remember is guarantee. The band celebrated the 40th anniversary of "Live at Leeds" in 2010, touring extensively and performing the whole of "Tommy" to audiences in the UK and Europe, amid critical acclaim.

Raw Power, Passion and Soul, that's what defines the members that make up Who’s Who. Their longevity and chemistry together as a unit is unchallengeable - 13 years in a stable line-up, the longest ever for any Who type band; and from that comes an understanding of each other as players; much like The Who themselves. Any player will tell you that you cannot buy chemistry, and it serves as a testament to the reputation they have worked extremely hard to cement.

Who's Who plays to its strengths, which is its collective talent as players and performers. The music will always come first - there are no wigs or "stick on" sideburns here.

As history rolls on; they have proved to be an essential ingredient to fans of The Who and the musical legacy it's left behind.

Band / Bands: The Floyd Effect
Other Info: The music of Pink Floyd as it was always meant to be heard

Having toured since 2007, The Floyd Effect is renowned for the remarkable accuracy with which it performs the iconic music of Pink Floyd. All of the band’s members are top quality musicians with pedigrees that stretch across all manner of musical genres, and they faithfully recreate the music and intensity of a Pink Floyd concert without recourse to backing tracks, racks of computers, or other technological wizardry. Every note that you hear is played and sung by the band, making each concert a genuine ‘live’ experience; powerful, immersive and emotional. And, of course, the music is supported by a dramatic light show that incorporates the iconic circular screen, two sets of projections, smoke and lasers.

Sit back and enjoy the Floyd Effect as the band presents a musical journey through the Pink Floyd canon including a complete performance of Dark Side Of The Moon – unbroken, as it was always meant to be heard.

Unless you were there the first time around, the music of Pink Floyd was never as real as this.

As a show this was as good as it gets. The timing, delivery and recreation of the Floyd sound was faultless, and many tracks took me to places I had forgotten existed as the sound washed over me.

Unbelievable! I heard The Floyd Effect for the first time last night. To say I was blown away would be an understatement. Terrific music, brilliantly performed reducing me to tears. I did not ever expect to hear this wonderful music performed live in this way. Thank you for a truly fabulous evening.

I had the good fortune to see the original Pink Floyd twice. The Floyd Effect are as good as the original line up and, with the intimacy of the venue, it’s like being in the front row. They were stupendous. I would urge any Floyd fan to make the effort to see them. You will be elated.

Band / Bands: John Bramwell (I Am Kloot)
Other Info: JOHN BRAMWELL ANNOUNCES NEW SOLO ALBUM AND LIVE TOUR

I Am Kloots songwriter and frontman, John Bramwell, has announced the release of his first studio solo album Leave Alone The Empty Spaces and a live tour of a brand new show in November 2017.

The record is a stunning showcase of Johns skilful, widely acclaimed song-writing and his unique voice. Its the first completely new collection of songs by John as a solo artist since he started his adventures away from I Am Kloot.

Leave Alone The Empty Spaces has been inspired by Johns travels around the UK and Europe performing more than 300, intimate solo gigs. Travelling in his VW Campervan with his dog Henry, the experience allowed John to explore parts of the country hitherto unknown, develop his solo sound and ideas, and meet an awful lot of interesting people…

The album is inspired by the spirit of liberty, independence, adventure and solitude that John has enjoyed on the road, as well as the diverse emotions that escape and travel can bring about – from sadness to exhilaration.

His live show is testament to that too. Audiences can expect a highly personal experience from a performer who has completely immersed himself in the experience of connecting with live audiences of all kinds. This adventure has taken John to little rooms above pubs (after promising a fan he would play in their town that doesnt have gigs) to World War II underground bunkers in Germany.

Its about rediscovering the romance, intimacy and magic of the live music experience, one to one with the audience. The new show will include songs from Leave Alone The Empty Spaces, a handful of songs from his follow up album, which he has already started to record, and ten I Am Kloot classics that he has rearranged with other instruments.

And of course therell be the usual off the wall chat and tall stories…

This is a chance to see one of the countrys most talented songwriters at the top of his game.

Leave Alone The Empty Spaces is released on 3rd November.

Please Note – Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult and seated on the balcony.

Band / Bands: Feast of Fiddles
Other Info: Feast of Fiddles 25th Annual Tour - 7.30pm @ The Atkinson, Southport - 01704-533333.

Little did the band think it would be setting off on its 25th annual spring tour in 2018 but what started as an idea in a folk club has become a national folk-rock institution. Feast of Fiddles has been variously likened to a “group of geography teachers” or “Bellowhead with bus passes!” but doesn’t seem to be slowing down any. A band of friends that puts on a show of huge dynamic range performed with passion, joy and a liberal dose of fun. Typically, fiddlers Peter Knight (Steeleye Span), Chris Leslie (Fairport Convention), Brian McNeill (Battlefield Band), Ian Cutler (Bully Wee), Tom Leary (Lindisfarne) and Garry Blakeley (Band of Two) add the large range of fiddle playing styles to the rock back-line of guitars, keyboards, sax and accordion – all held together by legendary drummer Dave Mattacks. A live music entertainment like no other on the circuit which is guaranteed to be enjoyed by even the most doubting of friends dragged along!

Band / Bands: Twinkle Twinkle (2:30pm Performance)
Other Info: There are melodies that live in all of us. No one knows that more than Marty the puppy, whose songs and playtime with his Dad are the best part of his day.

But sometimes, you have to learn how to find the music inside yourself. Twinkle Twinkle is a beautiful adventure in music and light that features high quality puppetry, magical interaction and a gorgeous original score with live music-making for all.

This original tale of love, loss and light has been especially made for audiences aged 1 – 3 and its rich, near-wordless storytelling entrances toddlers and parents alike.

Developed in association with Tonic Theatre award-winner, Anna Newell, this third production for young audiences by Touched Theatre continues the company’s commitment to making emotionally literate original theatre for children.

Twinkle Twinkle takes the classic nursery rhyme and uses its ideas of melody and distance to explore resilience for the very young and the ways we can learn to carry the light of those we love inside ourselves, even when we are apart.

Doors for this event open at 2pm and the performance starts at 2:30pm.

Band / Bands: Twinkle Twinkle (12:30pm Performance)

Band / Bands: Limehouse Lizzy
Other Info: Limehouse Lizzy continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. The band have also added a tribute into their show to ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist (and world renowned solo artist) Gary Moore.

From their Official PRS award, performing for Virgin Atlantic in Barbados, T.V. appearances (BBC 2's "Arena" amongst others), and to actually being recruited to record and tour by members of the original Thin Lizzy, Limehouse Lizzy enter their 21st year with their most explosive show and critically-acclaimed line-up yet.

Despite international tours (UAE, Germany and previously USA, Scandinavia, Caribbean etc.), corporate clients (Mitsubishi, NatWest) and even book appearances (The Rocker, Send In The Clones), they've shoehorned a co-headline tour with tribute giants Livewire into 2015, along with their own stand-alone tour, in what will be an exhausting year-long schedule. BURGESS, NICOL && KEMP

The Atkinson Studio venue will play host to three friends who are stars of folk-rock with a wealth of musical history under their belts.

Paul Burgess is a rock drummer best known as a member of hit-makers 10CC, and who has also played with classic bands Jethro Tull, Camel, Magna Carta and The Icicle Works.

Ken Nicol is one of the country’s leading guitarists and a singer/songwriter who has been a member of The Albion Band and Steeleye Span, as well as having a highly successful solo career.

Rick Kemp is the long-serving bass player with folk-rock legends Steeleye Span as well as being a guitarist, songwriter, singer and record producer in his own right.

Ken Nicol said about the line-up “I played with Rick when we were both in Steeleye Span and some time ago I was talking with him about putting a band together to play our own music. He liked the idea of trying it as a three piece, which meant we had to decide who we wanted on drums. We figured that there was no-one we wanted more than Paul Burgess.”

The Beginnings of Fairport Convention

Ashley Hutchings MBE, the Guv'nor of folk-rock and founder member of Britain's
much-loved and admired folk-rock group Fairport Convention, has put together a new and entertaining show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the group.

Titled “The Beginnings of Fairport Convention”, this words and music performance features Ashley and singer/guitarist Becky Mills.

Starting with Ashley's 1967 diary entries which relate the forming of the group, the show continues with plenty of informative and often funny words and plenty of songs from the early days of Fairport, including many not on the first four Fairport album releases. Along the way a picture of the late sixties music scene in this country is vividly painted and The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix come into the story.

The Beginnings has been presented at Cromer and Cropredy festivals where it was a great success.

Autumn Tour 2018

Featuring full performance of “Wishbone Ash: The First Album (1970)”….plus more

Fresh from sold-out 2017 shows during which they performed Wishbone Ash’s seminal 1972 album Argus in its entirety, and following hot on the heels of a Spring 2018 tour featuring 1974’s There’s the Rub, Martin Turner and his band return to the concert stages in Autumn 2018 to perform another classic album from the vintage years of Wishbone Ash – 1970’s iconic Wishbone Ash debut album.

Wishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music’s best loved works and influencing numerous successful bands, resulting in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring and best loved British rock acts – its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music.

Over four decades later, the enduring music of the classic marks of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Wishbone Ash, Argus, Pilgrimage, There’s the Rub, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist and key creative force, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums, with his passionate vocal delivery, songwriting ability, keen melodic sense and production values being a key ingredient in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to perform the band’s best loved works with his current line-up, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic, and drummer Tim Brown.

In recent years Martin Turner has delighted audiences worldwide with his performances of material from the classic periods of Wishbone Ash’s history. Martin’s 2018 touring continues his exploration of the Wishbone Ash catalogue and coincides with the release of a deluxe 30-disc Wishbone Ash career retrospective CD boxed-set entitled The Vintage Years 1970-1991 (Snapper Music) as well as Martin Turner’s 2016-recorded 2CD/DVD package The Beauty Of Chaos – Live at the Citadel. The Autumn 2018 tour shows shall feature classic tracks from the extensive Wishbone Ash repertoire, as well as new music that remains true to the original Wishbone Ash style plus, of course, a full performance of Wishbone Ash.

Released in December 1970, the debut Wishbone Ash album contained an eclectic mix of progressive rock, hard-rock, blues, jazz and folk influences with the band’s pioneering twin guitar harmonies resplendent throughout. Unlike many bands who developed an identifiable style across the course of several albums, the still youthful Wishbone Ash set the blueprint with their first offering. Featuring stage favourites such as “Blind Eye”, “Lady Whiskey” and album-closing tour-de-force “Phoenix”, the album received rave reviews from the music media with legendary broadcaster John Peel proclaiming “I haven’t been so impressed with a relatively new band for a long time. Their music is original, exciting and beautifully played.” The album’s appeal has endured five decades of musical change and remains a firm favourite with fans of the band and the classic rock genre.

It is anticipated that fans will be enthralled by these “vintage album” tours, the likes of which have been so successful for other classic bands. Further vintage album tours are likely in the future – a genuine last opportunity to hear these much-loved works performed live and in full.

Band / Bands: Chantel McGregor
Other Info: A female guitar prodigy, at fourteen Chantel was told by major labels that she had a “great voice, but girls don’t play guitar like that!” Wisely ignoring the comments, she enrolled at the Leeds College of Music and became the first student in the college’s history, to achieve a 100% pass mark, with 18 distinctions. Chantel left with a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music and a coveted prize, the college’s musician of the year award.

If you measure an artist’s prospects by the company they keep, then Chantel has been moving in the right direction. Early in her career, Chantel was invited to perform with Joe Bonamassa, on two of his UK tours.

When Chantel released her 2011 debut album, Like No Other, one critic said, “Chantel McGregor deserves to be held up as a messiah of blues-rock and given her own mountain. She doesn’t strum or pick her guitar but almost bends and distorts it, as if she’s channelling the ghost of Hendrix through her fingers”

The album was produced by Livingstone Brown, whose production credits include Ed Sheeran, Robin Trower, and Shakira. The end result was a beautifully crafted debut album that showcased Chantel’s versatility and talent as a singer-songwriter.

Chantel’s follow up album, Like Control, again produced by Livingstone Brown, was released in October 2015 to critical acclaim.

All About Rock’s review of the album said:
‘The album in its entirety has a common theme running through of gothic imagery which makes it almost a concept album but each track stands out on its own. Chantel’s double tracked vocals are amazingly tight & the production on this album sounds loose which is a compliment to Livingstone Brown & Chantel who have obviously spent a lot of time on the arrangements. The girl can obviously shred but she does so in a very understated & despite the title of the album, a controlled way. Recommended for fans of blues, rock, Jeff Buckley, Marillion, Big & Rich, Country & Nick Drake. This is a hard album to categorize & pigeon hole which in this day & age of labels & boxes is a good thing.’

Planetmosh reviewed the album with the following comment:
‘The album is full of great guitar work, but Chantel McGregor isn’t just a guitar player – she does the vocals too and they are equally impressive. She’s got a great voice and the variety of songs on the album allows her to demonstrate a range of styles vocally. It really is a great album.’

The single, Take The Power, was playlisted for 5 weeks on Planet Rock radio.

Band / Bands: Peter Knight's Gigspanner
Other Info: Thursday 8 November 2018 – 7.30pm - Box Office 01704-533333.

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner
Since his departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span at the end of 2013, fiddle player Peter Knight has turned his full attention to his trio Gigspanner, and in the process has established their reputation as one of the most innovative acts on the folk/roots scene, garnering along the way a reputation for dismantling traditional music and song and reassembling it in an entirely original, imaginative and beautiful way.
Unhindered by the limits of technical ability, they take self-penned along with music rooted in the British Isles and with the flick of a bow, a finely chosen chord or slip of a beat, produce richly atmospheric arrangements layered in a wealth of subliminal musical influences “with notes seemingly plucked from the stars and rhythms from the equator”
What makes Gigspanner unique is the variety of musical colours on their palette. What makes them brilliant is how they blend them without ever muddying the landscape.

The advent of Gigspanner has introduced a whole new audience to the extraordinary musicianship of Peter Knight who has without question been a huge inspiration on the folk-roots scene since the folk revival of the 1960’s.
Classically trained at The Royal Academy of Music in London, Peter discovered Irish music via the flourishing folk scene in 1960's London and was immediately hooked.

Immersing himself totally in the challenge of learning to play traditional music, he was spotted by Ashley Hutchings and Martin Carthy, and invited to join the fledgling Steeleye Span. They went on to become one of the most successful Folk-Rock band in Britain, securing a string of Gold Albums and top ten hits, and remains influential after more than 40 years.
Peter is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Sacha Trochet on percussion, both powerful and intelligent musicians in their own right.
"Many people said that this was one of the best gigs they'd ever been to. I'd agree with that. If you get a quarter of a chance to see them, go" Mike Harding

Band / Bands: Julian Littman
Other Info: Julian Littman from Steeleye Span is touring his one man show “FolkSoulBrother”

A member of folk rock pioneers Steeleye Span for the past six years, Julian Littman has been part of one of the band’s most productive periods – not only revisiting the classic Now We Are Six record live but also helping shape the Wintersmith project with the late Terry Pratchett. It’s a natural fit for Julian, who has played alongside some of the most famous names in British music over the years – including Gerry Rafferty, Pete Townsend, Dexys Midnight Runners, Richard & Linda Thompson and Barbara Dickson – as well as writing for artists such as Sheena Easton, Philip Bailey and Sister Sledge. A seasoned performer (his parallel acting career has seen him star in TV and film as well as the musicals Return To The Forbidden Planet and We Will Rock You) he has released two solo albums and is touring the live show FolkSoulBrother

FLEETWOOD BAC are the world’s first and best Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band, endorsed by Mick Fleetwood himself, the only Mac tribute to authentically replicate the classic Rumours line-up.
Over the last few years they have received rave reviews from The Stage newspaper, the U.K.s leading Fleetwood Mac fansites, the official Stevie Nicks website; and from ecstatic audiences wherever the band played, wowing audiences as far afield as Dubai, St. Tropez, the Cayman Islands and Monte Carlo, and twice selling out the world-famous Minack Theatre in Cornwall.

Fleetwood Bac have also been rated by The Times newspaper as one of the U.K.’s top 5 tributes, alongside The Bootleg Beatles, Bjorn Again and the Counterfeit Stones.

Fans include original Mac bassist and biographer Bob Brunning, who joined the band several times on stage, and Peter Green’s official biographer Martin Celmins.

The sound, the look, the mystical atmosphere and on-stage chemistry are all portrayed with the passion and energy that got the seal of approval from Big Daddy Mick, and built up an excellent reputation amongst Mac fans through numerous tours, festival appearances, corporate events and TV and radio slots all over the U.K. and Europe.

The Fleetwood Bac show focuses on the Rumours era of the band (still the 5th biggest-selling album of all time). It also features several songs from the Peter Green days, plus some of Stevie’s biggest solo hits, in either a theatrical 2-hour show, including costume-changes and an acoustic section, or a one-hour Greatest Hits Show, specially tailored for corporate events.

Songs featured (all UK and US hit singles) include: Dreams, Don’t Stop, Go Your Own Way, You Make Loving Fun, Tusk, Gypsy, Everywhere, Oh Well, Rhiannon, Little Lies, Black Magic Woman, Seven Wonders, Say You Love Me, Big Love, Oh Diane, Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around, Albatross, Sara, Man Of The World, Hold Me, Green Manalishi, Need Your Love So Bad, The Chain etc…

What people have said about Fleetwood Bac:

Keep up the good work! Much luck.
Mick Fleetwood

Loved the show, really enjoyed playing with you.
Bob Brunning, original Fleetwood Mac bass player, and author of Fleetwood Mac: Rumours And Lies

Stevie looks fabulous… Lindsey’s act is well sussed… Mick is entertaining to watch throughout… Christine is unbelievably accurate… first-rate.
Martin Celmins, Peter Green’s official biographer

Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: John Otway
Other Info: Back in the austere 1950's a schoolboy drank a bottle of ink and instantly became the centre of attention in the playground.

Rock veteran John Otway dubbed himself "rock'n'roll's greatest failure after many unsuccessful attempts to produce a second hit single to follow his 1977 classic (Cor Baby, That's) Really Free with Wild Willy Barrett.

However, a mere quarter century later, he was back on Top of The Pops with the wonderful disco pastiche, "Bunsen Burner" and back in the charts as a birthday present from his adoring and patient fans.

And, more recently, his "Beware Of The Flowers Cause I'm Sure They're Going To Get You Yeah" voted the seventh greatest lyric of all time in a BBC poll.

But that, of course, was not enough.

A couple of years ago John realised that live footage from the many concerts over the years, plus many TV appearances and a failed world tour attempt would make an entertaining documentary film. So he made one. Initially expecting a couple of humble screenings for fans, the film premiered at the Odeon, Leicester Square, was shown at Cannes and at prestigious UK film festivals including Cambridge during it's national tour.

2016 saw a remarkably successful Kickstarter appeal which raised over £40,000 for John Otway and the Big Band to record their first new album in many years on the island of Monserrat, whose famous studios hosted bands such as the Rolling Stones before being devastated by forces of nature, being a preferable option to Harlow.

The album (strangely enough called "Montserrat") is available now on Red Bowler Records.

Expect madcap mayhem and some scintillating stunts from a man old enough to know better and also to be surprised at just what a showman and musician really lies underneath the tomfoolery.

He's a cabaret act masquerading as a rock act. He is gleeful, anecdotal, funny and life-enhancing. Canterbury Fayre Review.
