Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: Dough!
Other Info: Dough! explores how life can be filled with colour and beauty when we step outside the beige world we know.

Franky is in a mess, a very doughy mess. Unable to resolve the chaos in her kitchen she has to make a journey to an unfamiliar place to get help. Everything tastes, smells and feels different there.

Fantastic things can happen with ordinary stuff. And what could be more ordinary than the dough that makes our everyday staples. Familiar to all cultures, dough creates the loaves, naan bread, croissants, dumplings and chapattis that remind us of home.

Originally commissioned through Made To Be Seen from Creative Scene, the Creative People and Places project for North Kirklees.

Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: The Doors Alive Plus Guests
Other Info: The Doors Alive are the No.1 tribute band to the legendary, Sixties, Californian rock guru's - The Doors.

They re-create the sound, look, presence and feel of a real 1960's Doors concert perfectly and effortlessly, transporting the crowd back in time with such classic hits as 'Light My Fire', 'When The Music's Over, Riders On The Storm, The End and many more. The singer, Willie, captures the attitude, look and voice of the late, great Jim Morrison, and the other band members have honed the other Doors members playing styles note for note.

To achieve that authentic Sixties sound, the band use the very same instruments that members of the Doors originally used. These include a vintage Fender Rhodes Bass keyboard, a vintage Vox Continental keyboard and a vintage Gibson S.G guitar.

Under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult and seated on the balcony upstairs.

Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: Classic Rock Society Presents Magenta
Other Info: Magenta are very excited to announce that they’ll be returning to the Citadel during their biggest-ever sequence of gigs in Spring 2017. The concert will coincide with the release of the band's as-yet-unnamed seventh studio album to hit shelves in April 2017, their first since the release of the acclaimed "Twenty Seven Club" in 2013. The album will - as usual - feature the award-winning talents of Rob Reed (keyboards, bass, guitar), Christina Booth (vocals) and Chris Fry (lead guitar) alongside guest drummer Andy Edwards (IQ, Kiama, Frost*). The album will also see the band returning to long-form material with two 20 minute epics.

Rob Reed says:

"We haven't played live a huge amount in the last couple of years, so it will be great to get back on the road for an extended series of dates and play pieces from the new album alongside some of our older material."

The band will also release a DVD "Live at Leamington Spa" on November 12th, and will launch the DVD with a special acoustic show at Acapela Studios in Cardiff on the same day.

2017 marks the 15th anniversary of Magenta as a live act, an award winning career which has seen the band play in UK, Europe and America at events such as Baja Prog (Mexico-2003), Rosfest (USA-2005), IO Pages Fest (Netherlands - 2006), Nearfest (USA-2007), Summers End (UK - 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014), Night of the Prog (Germany - 2008) Celebr8 (UK - 2012) and Verona Prog (Italy - 2012).

What people have said about Magenta's live performances:

"Flawless" - Prog Magazine

"A Stunning Performance" - Where Worlds Collide

"Will linger long in the memory" - Fireworks

Gig at The Citadel in St Helens

Band / Bands: The Songs of Leonard Cohen 1934 - 2016
Other Info: This wonderful Tower of Songs - stripped back and desolate.

Enigmatic and sub textural, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, a wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line.

His music befriended an entire generation and so the announcement of his passing has truly marked the end of an era. He challenged us to listen more carefully, speak more thoughtfully, think more deeply and recognize our own humanity... A Man of Grace. This world will miss him very much..

With a reputation of performing in this exact way and with an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in an intimate and sensitive style, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form.

Amongst a concert of Cohen’s well known songs, including Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah are also poems by Federico Garcia Lorca that Keith James has set to music. Lorca is said to be Cohen’s greatest influence. Additionally, songs from Leonard Cohen’s Album ‘You want it Darker’ released only 10 days before his death – produced by his son, Adam.

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent

‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’ Sunday Times

‘an elegant and beautifully crafted reinterpretation of a great Artist’s words’ BBC Radio Scotland

‘certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ The Guardian

‘All the tears of time are shed in a few brief lines’ Times Literary Supplement

‘a sensitive and pleasingly understated delivery, all the better that the songs might speak for themselves’ Acoustic Magazine

Band / Bands: The Furrow Collective
Other Info: The Furrow Collective

Nominated ‘Best Traditional Track’ with The Unquiet Grave and Emily was nominated for ‘Folk Singer Of The Year’ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2016.

Nominated ‘Best Group’ & ‘Best Traditional Track’

BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015

Rachel Newton, Lucy Farrell, Emily Portman and Alasdair Roberts

Voices, guitar, harp, viola, concertina, saw and banjo.

Described by MOJO as 'a mouthwatering collaboration', Alasdair Roberts, Emily Portman, Lucy Farrell and Rachel Newton are four fine soloists sharing a mutual love of traditional songs, from both sides of the English and Scottish borders, with playful, boundary-defying musicianship. Since their critically acclaimed debut At Our Next Meeting, The Furrow Collective has been in demand as a touring band, gigging throughout Europe and performing BBC live sessions. Hot on the heels of two BBC Folk Award nominations, they have released an outstanding five track EP Blow out the Moon last autumn, coinciding with touring, offering a tempting taster of their next album.

Each band member leads a song, moving with ease from jaunty stories of ailing horses, to poignant laments and sparsely adorned supernatural ballads. Blow Out the Moon culminates with the beautiful title track, a lullaby in spine-tingling four-part harmony. Strikingly unaffected vocals are accompanied by harp, guitar, viola, concertina, piano, banjo, fiddles and musical saw. Blow Out the Moon reflects the breadth of the Furrow Collective’s diversity whilst showing a crystallisation of their unique sound.

A bravely sparse and compelling new take on traditional songs... A quietly classy young folk band Guardian

The Furrow Collective have an air of immeasurable antiquity, while at the same time making the songs vibrantly new. R2

A mouth-watering collaboration **** 4 Stars Mojo

Band / Bands: Bootleg Blondie
Other Info: BOOTLEG BLONDIE is the official Debbie Harry & Blondie tribute band and the only Blondie tribute to play the legendary CBGB’s in New York City before its demise in 2006. CBGB’s was the Holy Grail of American Punk and New Wave, where the real Blondie first kicked off their career.

The Bootlegs have played the Isle Of Wight Festival, the 100 Club and the Hammersmith Palais in London, The Electric Ballroom, Eric’s in Liverpool, and have opened up for amongst others The Undertones, Slade, Bad Manners, The Beat, Heaven 17, Toyah, Hazel O’Connor, Tony Hadley and can be seen at all the major venues and festivals around the UK and Europe.

Debbie Harris and the boys have met the REAL Blondie and are officially endorsed by the band. Debbie Harry got in touch in 2006 when she heard we were playing CBGB’s in New York City to wish us good luck with our show and when Clem Burke, Blondie's charismatic drummer, found out that we were making a replica of his Premier drum kit, he arranged for us to meet him to sign our bass drum skin. ‘During the 2010 Blondie tour of the UK we took Clem out for a trip around London in our tour bus, he signed that too!!!!’

In 2014 Clem invited Debbie and Andy to a recording session at the Foo Fighters’ famous 606 Studio in Los Angeles, where they saw Clem and the awesome Neve mixing desk in action!

Debbie and Andy got married in March 2016 and to their great delight received two video clips from both Blondie and Debbie Harry herself congratulating them on their wedding day. What a wedding present!

And probably the best Xmas present in the world ever was in 2016 when Clem Burke came along to a Bootleg Blondie gig and actually got up and played drums on stage with the band. Afterwards he said that watching and playing with Bootleg Blondie was very emotional. We were very touched by his presence!

Debbie Harris, lead vocalist of Bootleg Blondie, has the looks, the voice and the attitude of the original Blondie bombshell and like her heroine is typically outrageous on stage. She has been known to wear dustbin liners, thigh length boots and t.shirts with more holes than t.shirt! Debbie's pride & joy is her guitar which she plays at every show and is signed by all the Blondie members.

Debbie Harris is the niece of the celebrated singer and actress Shani Wallis who played Nancy in Lionel Bart’s musical film 'Oliver'!

‘Good luck with your show!’ DEBBIE HARRY

'Playing with Bootleg Blondie was very emotional' CLEM BURKE

'Hey Debbie and Andy congratulations, rock the house!' DEBBIE HARRY AND BLONDIE
