CONG-FUSION
Cong-Fusion are a group of musicians who perform original tunes written and composed by Ryan McCaffrey. He began writing the music in 2006 while studying at what is now known as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He performed these tunes at La Raza in Cambridge and as a direct result from one of these first performances Ryan was asked to arrange his tunes for NYJO. Since then, they have performed in many formats and with a variety of different members.
While living in London the Ryan McCaffrey Sessions Jam Session was born which featured musicians including established names from the UK jazz scene.
Cong-Fusion consists of:
-Renowned drummer, Joseph Malone (Horace Silver, Chaka Khan, Sir Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber)
-Award-winning saxophonist, Tom Ridout (BBC Young Musician Jazz Award Finalist)
-UK jazz scene favourite, Alan Short, on flute (saxophonist for Donna Summer, Chic, Natalie Cole, and Sam Moore)
-Up-and-coming bassist, Flo Moore (Royal Academy of Music, Jason Rebello, Telegraph Top Jazz Albums)
-Percussionist, Andy Sedman (Gina Sedman, FUNKSHONE, The Sindecut, Fred Wesley, Other Mirror, Soul Immigrants)
-Composer and keyboardist, Ryan McCaffrey (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) • -Trumpeter and co-writer, Rowan Porteous (in-demand session musician)
The World As We Know is the band’s debut 9-track album, launching (this gig) at The CLF Art Lounge and Roof Garden.
The World As We Know it (Title track review)
Opening with the Fender Rhodes and percussion, there is an almost ambient feel to The World As We Know It. However, once the bass kicks in with a laid-back lick, there is no mistaking that this is a funk track. The main theme and solo sectIons are led by jazz flautIst, Alan Short; the flute’s light Ombre flows like water over the solid funky backline and beat. This creates the perfect juxtapositIon – the flute akin to a light parfait complementIng a heavier steak dinner. The track also features an impressive synth solo, by Ryan McCaffrey, which is reminiscent of the styling of Snarky Puppy.
“It’s been a thrilling yet humbling experience to have the opportunity to work with such incredible musicians to produce this single, and the upcoming EP,” commented Ryan McCaffrey – band leader, and composer. “The World As We Know It is inspired by the world we live in, and draws partIcularly from the ongoing concerns of climate change.”
McCaffrey contInued, “While the intro uses slightly more dissonant chords, and more obscure percussive sounds to depict the current situatIon regarding climate change. This sense of warning or foreboding melts away like the polar ice caps to the main lick, which is upbeat. This represents the beauty of the world, as I’ve seen throughout my career as a touring musician. It indicates the hope that we can repair the world by reversing the impact of the climate crisis.”
