Classic Love, Modern Love, ‘Hyperlove’. Latest album for pop sensation MIKA marks a bold renewal. REVIEWED

Uplifting, vibrant, and thoroughly cohesive- with brand new album ‘Hyperlove’, MIKA embarks on a journey of deep exploration of the human form. A stunning portrayal of modern times, sitting in direct contrast with it’s ‘feel’- reminiscent of any ‘80s electronic pop masterpiece.

Due for release January 23rd via Republic Records, ‘Hyperlove’ marks multi-platinum, GRAMMY-nominated pop superstar MIKA’s seventh studio album and another notch on the belt of the Beirut-born global success story. Known for his energetic live shows and iconic falsetto, based on past releases, our expectation for this record was astronomical.

Title, and opening track, ‘Hyperlove’, acting as the spurious offspring of Kraftwerk and the best bits of The Greatest Showman, it sets a euphoric tone and demonstrates his ‘back to roots’ approach to piano-led songwriting. “Feeling like I’m hardly moving, unless I’m going at two hundred an hour. Feeling like my soul is restless, until you come around”, an ode to that one song buried deep in the furrows of his brow. Analysing the concept of bona fide adoration and yearning, what does it mean to love in today’s world?

Single ‘Modern Times’ is an energy builder. A divergent track offering a '90s dance feel, with considerably heavier moments. Lyrically observant of the speed at which society moves, listening leaves us contemplating the swift departure from mindful living in recent years and questioning every hasty decision we’ve ever made. Described by MIKA as “a cathedral-like cry, for faith and spirit, resisting the grind and weight of life and the passing of time.”

The vocal sample on interlude ‘Everything’s Beautiful’ gives the whole thing a nod to the eccentricity of its creator, tying in other tracks with cohesive bit parts blending wit, sophisticated theatrics, and absolute madness. Again, contributing to the euphoric nature of the record and offering a glimpse into the live show we are consequently expecting. Clever.

Most recent single ‘Immortal Love’, another with the cupid’s arrow moniker, offers up a timeless feel, and a heartfelt reflection on what pulls us up and journeys with us as we navigate life. A classic feel and one for both devoted MFCers and generic pop fans on the periphery. One or two filler tracks let the side down- ‘Excuses For Love’ feels marginally flat in comparison to the invigorating high-octane performance numbers in there, but on the whole, it’s a record with its sights set on iconic status, easily near the top of the pile of new releases in 2026.

9/10.
